The brick portion of the house was built by David M. DeFreest and family sometime between 1765 and 1771. The bricks themselves were originally fired in Holland during the mid 18th century and imported to the then Province of New York despite existing brick kilns being operable in the colony New Amsterdam, imported bricks were of better quality and used in buildings throughout Albany and Rensselaer counties.
